11/19/2023 0 Comments Taditional hunting quiver![]() ![]() Not only that but from a visibility sand point, having all that baggage on your bow while you’re trying to get a shot off on something. ![]() There’s just a lot of things that get in the way. You can bump it or you can scrape it if it doesn’t sit right on your lap when the bow quiver’s on your bow. Whether your doing that or hanging it up, or whatever your doing, you have that fletchie down there. The reason is that I hold my bow on my lap a lot. I’ve always used them to get to where I’m going to hunt and to move, but I always take them off. The one thing I don’t like about them is that they’re great to get to your blind. Other people swear by them so I’m not going to base it on that. They do have bow quiver’s for compound bows that are very, very quiet. I think Jason’s argument was a little bit skewed because he was using a compound bow. I have used a bow quiver for about three seasons now. It’s going to shoot differently with that bow quiver on it than it is without the bow quiver. When you put a bow quiver on your bow, it changes the whole tuning of your bow. Jason Albert – You also have to remember the tuning aspect. That’s to get everybody’s perspective and that’s a very interesting take on the bow quiver. They would one-hundred percent recommend the bow quiver, but this is the point of The Archer’s Roundtable. I guarantee that there are listeners and there’s guys that I run into that are 100% the other way of what you are saying. I can understand what you’re saying then. When I took my shot that quiver made so much noise that the turkey was gone before the arrow even left the bow. Somehow or another, while I was out there doing that hike, I rattled that bow and it seemed a little bit loose off the quiver. It was probably about an eight kilometer hike out to the place that I was going to be hunting. ![]() I was using a compound bow with a bow quiver. Jason Albert – Yeah, from personal experience. Ned Miller – Is that coming from personal experience? “When I took my shot that quiver made so much noise that the turkey was gone before the arrow even left the bow.” I think that they are the worst thing that anybody could do for their bows and their accuracy. I have said on the podcast’s before that I am 100% against a bow quiver. Jason Albert – A new user should avoid a bow quiver because they don’t know the basics of tuning yet. I mean, you have a back quiver, pocket quiver, side quiver, the backpack style quivers. Ned Miller – Can you touch on a little bit of a functioning standpoint. You could just put your arrows in your pocket if you wanted to, but of course the arrows would eventually poke a hole in your pocket.Ī pocket quiver is light and it get’s you out and get’s you going until you figure out exactly what quiver you want for the different situations you’ll be shooting. You just need to get out and start shooting. Jason Albert – Because when you are first starting off you don’t really need the whole kit-n-caboodle. What about function with a pocket quiver? Why is that your suggestion? Ned Miller – That’s interesting that you say that because that wouldn’t have been my first thought, but from what you are saying it makes a lot of sense. It will get you out there and get you started at a low price. I would suggest starting with a pocket quiver. I have three or four different quivers for every situation. Jason Albert – From a newbie’s perspective, I say, go with what you want. I figured that we could start off with you on the quiver topic. Jason, obviously from the name of your business, Rasher Quivers, you are heavily involved with building quivers. It is found in Asia, Africa, the Americas, Europe and Australia. Late blight Phytophthora infestans (A1 mating type) is distributed around the world. Animals, humans and farm machinery can also carry late blight spores in infected plant material, soil or water on their hooves, footwear or tyres. The thick-walled oospores travel longer distances by water or wind. Zoospores are washed by rain into the soil where they may infect young potato tubers. Infected tubers in crop debris, grading cull piles, seed potatoes and self-sown volunteer plants may spread sporangia. Sporangia inside potato tubers can also disperse spores between crops. Late blight sporangia are spread between host plants by water or wind. Host weeds include the kangaroo apple ( S. Other hosts are capsicums ( Capsicum annuum), chillies ( C. The main host of Phytophthora infestans is potatoes ( Solanum tuberosum). The late blight lifecycle is completed under ideal conditions in five days, if the air temperatures remain above 10☌ and humidity is over 75% for two consecutive days. Sporangia inside potato tubers and oospores may live for many years. They are killed by frosts and hot weather. Sporangia and zoospores are short-lived spores in plant debris or soil. The sexual spore stage occurs inside plant material between the A1 and A2 mating types of sporangia and produces thick-walled spores called oospores. Each sporangia creates 20-40 thin-walled spores named zoospores. The asexual spore stage produces millions of thin-walled spores called sporangia. The Phytophthora infestans lifecycle alternates between mould growth and spore production. Healthy looking potato tubers may also break down in storage due to late blight infection. It attacks the host plant’s foliage, fruit, stems or tubers at all growth stages. Late blight causes sudden plant death and destroys infected potato crops in a matter of days. They have an uneven, corky, dry rot inside and can become a foul-smelling mush if infected by secondary bacterial soft rots. Infected potato tubers have brown to purple skin lesions that are dark, reddish brown underneath (Figure 3). In humid weather white mould (or “fuzz”) grows under the leaves and infected plants suddenly collapse. Lesions are often enclosed by a halo of lighter green tissue. Infected tissue is initially water soaked (grey-green), then necrotic (brown or black) with firm, rough surfaces (Figure 2). As a consequence late blight spores require water to germinate and penetrate host plant tissues.Įarly signs of late blight infection are small flecks on infected leaves and plant stems. Though water moulds (or oomycetes) look similar to fungi, they are more closely related to algae. Late blight is caused by the water mould Phytophthora infestans. It is also a serious disease of capsicums, chillies, eggplants, pepinos, tamarillos and tomatoes (Figure 1). Late blight caused the 1840’s European, Irish and Highland potato famines and destroys 5% of world potato crops every year. Late blight (caused by Phytophthora infestans) is one of the world’s worst diseases (or blight) of potatoes. This disease is a serious threat to Australia’s potato, vegetable and fruit industries. The use of NPWT was widely reported during Operation Iraqi Freedom and OEF. 11 Their handbook on Emergency War Surgery describes its role in combat wounds with an improved and accelerated healing. The use of vacuum wound closure systems in war wounds was reported for the first time in 2004 by Burris et al. Subsequently numerous authors have described their experience with NPWT in noncombat wounds. They concluded that application of controlled subatmospheric pressure creates an atmosphere conducive to wound healing. They also reported a decrease in tissue bacterial counts and an increase in random flap survival by 21% as compared to controls. They found an increase in blood flow by fourfold with a negative pressure of 125 mm Hg and a significant increase in granulation tissue formation. Subatmospheric pressure of 125 mm Hg was applied to the covered foam. 6 Using pig model, wound was covered by open cell foam and sealed by adhesive tape. reported their results in animal studies. 5Īlthough the use of negative pressure for medicinal purpose was described in 600 BC, it was only in 1997, when Morykwas et al. 4 Further technical refinements have validated its use during air transport, allowing casualties to receive continuous NPWT during air evacuation, from forward surgical center to a tertiary care center. 2, 3 The popularity of NPWT can be gauged by the fact that during Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) in March 2003, about 46% of wounds were managed with NPWT and in September 2003 its use had increased to over 90% of admitted wounds. The benefits of NPWT in combat trauma have been reported by various authors. The disadvantages of this form of management were well recognized. Traditionally these wounds have been managed with wound irrigation, debridement, and a delayed closure. In a war scenario, an early wound care may be delayed due to late evacuation to a forward surgical center. Involvement of multiple anatomical sites, make these individuals critical, requiring urgent resuscitation and life support. Due to high energy transfer, multiple tissue planes are opened leading to contamination beyond the zone of trauma. These wounds are heavily contaminated with dust, soil, the patient's clothing, and other foreign bodies, and characterized by extensive loss of soft tissues and bony materials. The wounds are sustained due to gunshots, grenade blasts, landmines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and bombs. The concept of negative pressure incisional management system in patients with a high risk of wound breakdown following surgery is under review, and may be of relevance in combat wounds.Ĭombat wounds pose a challenge to a military trauma surgeon. NPWT helps to provide temporary wound cover during the interim period of debridement and wound closure.įuture Directions: Future area of research in combat wounds is related to abdominal trauma with loss of abdominal wall. Early debridement is indicated followed by delayed closure of wounds. Delay in evacuation during an ongoing conflict carries the risk of systemic infection. The mechanism of NPWT in wound healing is multifactorial and often complex reconstructive procedure can be avoided in a combat trauma setting.Ĭritical Issues: Wounds sustained in military trauma are heavily contaminated with dirt, patient clothing, and frequently associated with extensive soft tissue loss and osseous destruction. Recent Advances: Encouraged by the results of NPWT in noncombat-related wounds, the military surgeons during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom used this novel method in a large percentage of combat wounds, with gratifying results. The concept of negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) in the management of combat-related wounds has evolved from the civilian trauma and the wounds from nontraumatic etiologies. An early wound cover is associated with lower rate of infections and a faster wound healing. Combat injuries, due to high energy transfer to tissues, lead to trauma at multiple anatomical sites. Significance: Wounds sustained in a combat trauma often result in a composite tissue loss. ![]() |
